Kinesio Taping
Proprioceptive taping is a rehabilitative taping technique that is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process. It is very different than other taping methods. The tape application microscopically lifts the skin, creating tiny folds. The folds increase interstitial space which then facilitates the movement of fluids and stimulates nerve receptors, which can help to re-educate the neuromuscular system, reduce pain and inflammation, enhance performance, prevent injury, promote good circulation and healing, and assist in returning the body to homeostasis.
Kinesio Taping involves taping over and around muscles in order to assist and support, or to prevent over-contraction. One technique gives the practitioner the opportunity to actually give support while maintaining full range of motion, enabling the individual to participate in physical activity with functional assistance.
The second technique helps prevent overuse or over-contraction and helps provide facilitation of lymphatic flow 24 hours per day. It is most commonly used in the acute stage of rehabilitation. Correctional techniques include mechanical, lymphatic, ligament / tendon, fascia, space, and functional. It allows treatment to continue well after leaving the clinic, as it is wearable for days. It is safe in many in populations from pediatric to geriatric.
